Wedding Cakes, Reimagined: The Styles Defining This Season

Wedding cakes have moved far beyond tradition. What was once a single tiered moment has evolved into something far more expressive - an extension of the overall design language, a statement piece, and in many cases, a true talking point of the celebration.

From sculptural centrepieces to long, table-length creations designed to be shared, here are the cake styles we’re currently seeing (and loving) across our weddings.

Sculptural Cakes

More art piece than dessert, sculptural cakes are where creativity takes centre stage. These designs move away from anything expected - fluid shapes, architectural forms, and textures that feel almost gallery-worthy.

They work beautifully for couples who want something completely unique, often tying into the overall aesthetic of the wedding in a subtle, conceptual way.

Draped Cakes

Draping has made its way from tablescapes into cake design, and the result is effortlessly elegant. Think soft folds, fabric-like textures, and a sense of movement.

Whether minimal and refined or dramatic and voluminous, draped cakes feel romantic and fashion-forward all at once.

Oversized Tiered Cakes (Cake Towers)

A modern take on the traditional tiered cake - only bigger, bolder, and designed for impact. These towering cakes often include faux lower tiers to achieve height without excess, allowing for a dramatic visual moment without unnecessary waste.

Perfect for larger weddings where scale matters.

Multiple Cakes

Rather than one central cake, we’re seeing couples opt for several smaller cakes displayed together.

This approach allows for variation in flavours and design while still maintaining a cohesive aesthetic - particularly beautiful when styled across a dedicated cake table.

Petal Cakes

Soft, delicate, and incredibly romantic. Petal cakes are defined by their intricate texture - layers of buttercream or fondant shaped into petal-like forms.

They pair effortlessly with garden-inspired weddings or anything leaning into a more feminine, refined aesthetic.

Guest Book Cakes

A playful and interactive twist - these are typically sheet-style cakes designed for guests to leave messages directly onto the icing before the cake is cut.

It becomes both a visual feature and a keepsake moment, adding a layer of personality to the celebration.

Sheet Cakes

Sheet cakes are large-format cakes, usually rectangular or square, designed for serving larger numbers of guests. They can be single or multi-layered and decorated in anything from minimal finishes to more elaborate designs.

They’re practical, versatile, and increasingly being styled as part of the overall tablescape rather than hidden behind the scenes.

Table-Length Cakes

Often referred to as long cakes or table-length cakes, these are an evolution of the sheet cake - extended into a long, narrow format designed to run along a table.

We love creating these at two metres or more, allowing them to double as both dessert and centrepiece. They bring a sense of abundance and theatre to the table, especially when styled with florals or candles.

Vintage Cakes

This trend continues to hold its place. Think delicate piping, soft pastel tones, and playful details like cherries or berries.

There’s a nostalgia to these cakes that feels both charming and elevated when executed well.

Italian-Style Crostatas

For something more relaxed and regionally inspired, large Italian crostatas are a beautiful alternative.

Rustic yet elegant, they’re especially suited to outdoor weddings—generous, abundant, and best served under the sun.

Tiramisu ‘Cakes’

A newer favourite - oversized tiramisu presented as a cake, often finished with cocoa powder inscriptions such as Just Married or the couple’s names and date.

It’s relaxed, unexpected, and undeniably delicious.

A Note on Style

What’s most exciting right now is the freedom couples are embracing. There’s no longer a single “correct” approach to wedding cakes - only what feels aligned with the overall atmosphere of the celebration.

Whether that’s something sculptural and bold, nostalgic and detailed, or abundant and designed for sharing, the cake has become an integral part of the design story rather than just a tradition to tick off.

If you’re currently planning your wedding and thinking about how your cake can feel like a true part of the overall design, it’s something we always love to explore with our clients. From the initial concept through to styling on the day, every detail is considered so that it feels beautifully aligned - never an afterthought, but an intentional and memorable part of the celebration.

Love, Johanna x
